Today we visited a dairy farm at Tauwhare. The farmers, Dave van den Beuken and Jenny Buckley and their workers showed us around their cowshed, we saw cows being milked and got to feel the suction inside the milking cups. A milk tanker arrived while we were there and we saw how the big hose connects from the truck to the milk vat so that the milk can be transported back to the dairy factory. Jenny showed us a fresian and a jersey calf and talked to us about how they get fed on the 'calfateria'. One of the workers drove the tractor into the huge feed bin so that we could see how the cows are fed some of their food. We also learnt that they eat the grass in the paddocks and then the farmers leave the paddock empty for 21 days so that the grass can grow again for the cows to feed.
Have a look at our pic collages that we put together of what we saw...
Wow room 6 you learnt such a lot. Fantastic Pic Collages I can see you had fun. Mrs Fong
ReplyDeleteHello Georgia and Room 6. Lovely to be able to read your blog from Cardiff in Wales. It looks a pretty wet day when you visited the farm, and farmers have to get up in all weather to milk the cows so that you have milk for your cereal or a smoothie.
ReplyDeleteIts Grannie Ann's 64th birthday today, and my 65th next week, and although its a long time since we were at school we are still learning. This time we are learning about the places that our great grandparents came from, and also meeting some distant relatives, having a fantastic time, your blog helps us keep in touch with what is happening at home, thanks for your efforts
Grannie and Pa Nelson
